Something to Ponder ... Warren Buffet
"Nothing sedates rationality like large doses of effortless money. After a heady experience of that kind, normally sensible people drift into behavior akin to that of Cinderella at the ball."
-- Warren Buffett

Something to Ponder ... Alexis de Tocqueville
"The man who seeks freedom for anything but freedom's self is made to be a slave."

Something to Ponder ... George Steinbrenner
Love or hate the Yankees or him, you cannot deny the impact that George has had on the game of baseball. In remembrance here are a few quotes:
But why shouldn't I speak out? Don't you speak out in this country?
Don't talk to me about aesthetics or tradition. Talk to me about what sells and what's good right now. And what the American people like is to think the underdog still has a chance.
I am dead set against free agency. It can ruin baseball.
I am tough. Sometimes I'm unreasonable. I have to catch myself every once in a while.
I don't think that anybody should be suspended for life for anything, other than murder. How is it helping someone to say, 'You're done forever, your life's over'?

I don't want to be in the Hall of Fame. I don't think owners should be.
I haven't always done a good job, and I haven't always been successful -
but I know that I have tried.

Something to Ponder ... Bill Veeck
Baseball is almost the only orderly thing in a very unorderly world. If you get three strikes, even the best lawyer in the world can't get you off.

Something to Ponder ... Patrick Henry
"No free government, or the blessings of liberty, can be preserved to any people but by a firm adherence to justice, moderation, temperance, frugality, and virtue; and by a frequent recurrence to fundamental principles."

Something to Ponder ... C.S. Lewis
About the general connection between Christianity and politics, our position is more delicate.
Certainly we do not want men to allow their Christianity to flow over into their political life, for the establishment of anything like a really just society would be a major disaster.
On the other hand, we do want, and want very much, to make men treat Christianity as a means; preferably, of course, as a means to their own advancement, but, failing that, as a means to anything—even to social justice.
The thing to do is to get a man at first to value social justice as a thing which the Enemy [=God] demands, and then work him on to the stage at which he values Christianity because it may produce social justice. For the Enemy will not be used as a convenience. Men or nations who think they can revive the Faith in order to make a good society might just as well think they can use the stairs of Heaven as a short cut to the nearest chemist’s shop. Fortunately it is quite easy to coax humans round this little corner. --- C.S Lewis "The Screwtape Letters"

The Anatomy of Sin
I've been churning up what will become a sermon, devotional, SS lesson, or blog series of some sort. Based in the Scripture accounts in the earliest chapters of Genesis leading to our own current lives. It revolves around the 3 basic premises of any sin:
- SELFISHNESS - it always begins with the choice to honor ourselves
- BLAME - we always do what we do because of someone else
- DECEIT - when all else fails, we will lie about it
Not sure exactly where this is leading but it's clear there is truth to be explored.
